Environment Agency Consultation on Increased Waste Regulation and Charges and How this Might Affect UK Housebuilders

The Environment Agency is consulting on updated charges for waste management and regulatory activities, aiming to enhance efforts to combat waste crime and improve fairness. Proposals include a new waste levy (10% of certain permit charges) to combat waste crime and additional fees for waste exemptions, offering savings for farmers and bulk registrations. A new intervention fee will apply if breaches of regulations are suspected, while some hourly rates for environmental services will rise. Also, upfront fees will be introduced for voluntary remediation advice. These measures aim to improve regulatory efficiency and cost recovery.

The proposed changes to the Environment Agency services will increase costs and compliance requirements for UK housebuilders. They include new charges to address waste crime and poor waste management practices, which may raise expenses related to construction waste disposal. Enhanced regulatory measures could also require housebuilders to adopt stricter waste management strategies, potentially affecting project timelines and budgets.  For further information on the consultation follow this link.
